Visual Journey through Genesis and Creation – Genesis 1:1-2

Good morning beloved friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.

Genesis 1

Let’s find the truth of Genesis

I pray this message finds you resting in the grace and peace of the Lord Jesus.  This past week has been a week of testing and trials for me in my earthly work.  I pray the Lord finds me resting at his feet but better yet, he is the one doing it in and through me.  Our senses and bodily experience is so believable though, isn’t it?

Still, he always continues to reveal his amazing faithfulness no matter who difficult things get.  It’s simply a process of waiting and trusting.  Please pray that I will continue to hear his awesome voice of love and joy and be able to share it with others.  It feeds me such life when I can do that.

Today, I hope to share as best the Lord allows, a visual representation of what is happening or has happened in Genesis 1:1 and 1:2.  IMHO, Genesis 1:2 is one of the most powerful verses in the entire old Testament and the Bible itself.  It reveals the state of creation BEFORE God even makes (remakes?) anything.  I wrote about these verses in the post titled “The Earth was Formless and Void” and “Time Gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2?”  Please check them out if you haven’t already as they give an interesting perspective and background.

Let’s look at the verses:

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters Genesis 1:1-2

First, notice that it says in verse 1 that God created the heavens and the earth “in the beginning”.  Now it says the earth was “formless and void”.  Don’t you feel that we are being told that this current account is NOT the creation of the earth and the heavens?  That they were actually created in the “beginning” and this is NOT the beginning.  That is what my heart and mind tells me.  There is a huge missing time gap between verses 1 and 2.

Next, if we look at the word “God” in verse 1 it is actually plural or “Gods”.  We are taught that this means that it was the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit doing the work together, but is that the truth?  Even if you believe in the triune God, isn’t God still one?  If God is one, why would he say that the “Gods created the heavens and earth?  Is it possible that he had others help him or this is not his creation?  Could it be the (visible) creation of the “tares” that Jesus talked about in Matthew 13:24-30 whereas God’s true creation is still hidden?

Now, lets look at verse 2.  This verse is jammed-packed with good stuff as we are looking at the state of the earth at the time of this verse.  What do we see?

  1. It had no form and was void.
  2. Darkness was over the surface of the deep
  3. The Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters

First, it had no form and was void.   Please see the post on this as we get a great idea of the state of the spiritual realm called “earth” in this verse.  The earth is in a state of chaos and destruction, the same state that occurs after a huge judgment of God.  The entire earth is in a state of darkness as it has no true “form”.

To understand “form”, we have understand the meaning of these verses:

things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ  Colossians 2:17

who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “SEE,” He says, “THAT YOU MAKE all things ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN WHICH WAS SHOWN YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN.”  Hebrews 8:5

For the Law, since it has only a shadow of the good things to come and not the very form of things, can never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, make perfect those who draw near  Hebrews 10:1

If God reveals to us the meaning of Colossians 2:17 and these other verses, we can begin to see the state of the earth in Genesis 1:2.  It had no “form” and it lacked “true substance”.  Who is the one who contains the “true substance”?

Christ alone.

He was not yet given to the earth and all mankind, so the earth was in a state of formless void, darkness and chaos.  It was merely a shadow and copy of the true substance as it was under law.  It was incomplete, basically “naked” with no “righteous covering” just like Adam and Eve.

Also, in verse 2 we can see that darkness already existed.  The word used for darkness is the Hebrew word “choshek“.  This word is translated as: darkness as in an underground prison, misery, adversity, death, ignorance, sadness and wickedness.  You can find more here.  This is the spiritual state and condition of the earth in verse 2 of Genesis.  It is already under law which always produces death in anything that isn’t God himself.

It is interesting to note that God tells us that he himself creates darkness.  Thus, there was a time before Genesis 1:2 when the “choshek” or the darkness was created.

The One forming light and creating darkness (choshek), Causing well-being and creating calamity; I am the LORD who does all these Isaiah 45:7

Finally, it says the “Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters”.  Which spirit?  Are not angels themselves “spirits of God”?  The word used here is “ruach” and it’s translation is “breath, wind, spirit”.  Here is more on that word’s meaning.  Please notice that this does not necessarily mean the Holy Spirit.  It can be any spirit or angel of God.  God usually specifies his own Holy Spirit with the words “Holy” or “set apart” Spirit.

I hope that be deeply studying the words used by God, we can begin to see the state of the realm called “earth” in Genesis 1:2.  It is already in a complete state of chaos and darkness.  I made some crude illustrations to attempt to get a visual of what the state of the earth is in these verses.

May God reveal to us the truth.

Have a great day.
