Have you noticed what Genesis 1:1 SEEMS to say? Ponder it a bit.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth Genesis 1:1 NASB
It says that at the very beginning of everything, God created the Heavens and the Earth. To me, this says that this is even before the current account (in Genesis 1 and 2) we are telling you about. In other words, the “Heavens and the Earth” were created WAY BEFORE what we are now telling you about. Because if you go to verse 2, it reads as if (now) The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters Genesis 1:2 NASB
Why is darkness already present in verse 2 when God says “he creates darkness” in Isaiah 45:7? Yet we see no creation of darkness here.
Perhaps God had some serious judgments that occurred before the Adamic race was created? It is also very interesting that in Genesis 1 the wording says “after their kind”. If this was the first creation, then there would be NO kind that existed before this. Also, did you know the word we translate as “fill the earth” in Genesis 1:28 most often is translated as refill or replenish. Look at the KJV translation, what it says is amazing:
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth Genesis 1:28 KJV
Did Lucifer get a bunch of “do-overs”? Genesis 1:2 really seems to indicate there was a serious judgment that occurred on Earth that caused it to be “formless and void”. However, look at how Isaiah 45:18 says that the Lord God created the Earth:
For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited),
“I am the Lord, and there is none else. Isaiah 45:12 NASB
According to Isaiah 45:12, God did NOT create the Earth as a waste place. However, go back and look at Genesis 1:2 and see what state the Earth is in. It is in the same state of post-judgment that Jeremiah 4:23 talks about after a different judgment of the Earth.
I looked on the earth, and behold, it was formless and void;
And to the heavens, and they had no light Jeremiah 4:23 NASB
Also, notice that in Genesis 1:2 God sent forth his Spirit. Now look at Psalm 104:30
When you send forth your Spirit, they are created,
and you renew the face of the ground.
It definitely appears that at least one more judgments have occurred on Earth between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 as the Earth is in a formless and void state of darkness.
If this is true and it definitely looks that way, then everything from Genesis 1:2 on may NOT be the account of the original creation, but more like a re-creation. Some know this as the “Gap Theory”. To me, this makes a LOT of sense because there could be millions or even BILLIONS of physical years between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. This would explain many things such as scientific fossil age testing, dinosaurs, pre-Adam man such as homo-erectus and other “cave-men”. Also, interestingly enough, none of these pre-Adam humanlike beings match homo-sapiens DNA which shows us they were NOT part of the Adamic race.
Look at the most interesting words that Peter told us:
For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men
Peter tells us that the Earth was formed out of water and by water yet we don’t see that happening in Genesis 1 at all. It only says “in the beginning God created the Heaven’s and the Earth”. This is pretty conclusive that the things that Peter is talking about happened between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2. Also, look at verse 7 as he tells us the “present” heavens and earth are reserved for fire. This has to be the one we have now which is the one that was remade from Genesis 1:2 on.
There is a LOT of scriptural evidence to show that there were other versions of Earthly “worlds” before Genesis 1:2.
Here are some more points to ponder:
- Genesis 1:2 says that “The darkness was over the surface of the deep“. Thus, “darkness” already existed at this time. However, Isaiah 45:7 says “I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.” So, God had already created darkness and evil before Genesis 1:2 as there is no account of it being created in the first few chapters of Genesis. It had to have been created between Genesis 1:1 and 1.2.
- Also, go back to Genesis 1:2 again and see that it talks about the “deep” already existing at this point. This is a darker realm than natural Earth. Now, let’s go to Proverbs 8 where “lady Wisdom” is speaking.
“When He established the heavens, I was there,
When He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
28 When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became fixed,
29 When He set for the sea its boundary
So that the water would not transgress His command,
When He marked out the foundations of the earth;
30 Then I was beside Him, as a master workman;
And I was daily His delight,
Rejoicing always before Him,
31 Rejoicing in the world, His earth,
And having my delight in the sons of men. Proverbs 8:27-31 NASB
“Lady Wisdom” was with God when he did the initial creation including “inscribing a circle around the face of the deep” and when “the springs of the deep became fixed”. There was a time when these things happened as part of the Earthly creation, but they are NOT mentioned in Genesis 1 or 2. They had to have happened in the “time gap” between Genesis 1:1 and 1.2.
One thing I can’t resist. Who is “Lady Wisdom”? I think she is the Holy Spirit or “Gods helper”. Remember he said to Adam “man shouldn’t be alone” so he created a “helper” or a female counter part? Interesting things to ponder aren’t they?
I think this “time gap” idea could be a serious possibility because of all the evidence. I also think it’s very good because one of the reasons the scientific mind discards the Bible is that it can’t reconcile the natural, scientific evidence with a “young” 7-10k year old Earth. This would solve that dilemma because with a “time gap” between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 of possibly millions or even billions of years, that is all possible. We can then fully reconcile science with God’s Word.
If you are a “scientific mind” like myself, and want to read more about this, check out this most excellent site that has a TON of evidence of the time-gap theory.
What do you think? Isn’t the mystery of God so amazing?
