Do you ever wonder if God wants us to be poor and not have many material possessions? Were the “patriarchs” of the faith poor? Can we help others if we don’t have anything to give? Let’s look at a verse that caught my attention recently. It involves material goods and possessions or simply “wealth”. Does God want to keep us poor?
Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life Mark 10:29-30
How much more will you receive back by forsaking all and following Christ? When will you receive those things? In the future or the current age? Granted, these may not be all physical goods or wealth, but God does not want you to be poor. God is a giver and he gives to the humble who will thank him and give him glory and praise.
I believe he is very happy and pleased when we are content to have exactly as much as he wants us to have, no more, no less.
Sadly, we are frequently taught that we must be poor and have virtually nothing for material goods. The focus is on the story of the widows mite. I believe this is being confused with those who are “poor in spirit” or those who “love money” instead of the truth.
Can we really help others if we are broke and poor? I don’t believe we can. I pray the Lord will speak to you on these things.
Your loving Daddy wants to give you GOOD things. He just doesn’t want those things to have you.
God bless you.
