Mike Tyson isn’t normally known for his quotes, but one stuck with me. He said in a documentary about him “The darkness is the light”. There may be some real truth to this since John 1:9 specifically says there exists a “true” light. Can one then conclude there may also be other forms of light?
Could even darkness itself be a form of light?
For example, what is darkness for man is not for a cat and other animals that can see in the “dark”.
Let’s explore darkness and the powers that rule it and ask some questions while delving in scripture, shall we?
First, who rules over the darkness? Also, does there exist any power of this present darkness that operates outside of the almighty God’s sovereign power?
Let’s check some verses.
and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority Col 2:10
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me Matt 28:18
far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come Eph 1:21
His purpose was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms Eph 3:10
Isn’t that amazing?
The true, deep and hidden wisdom of God will be made known to the rulers and authorities of the current age of darkness.
Let’s look at some more as I love seeing the true power of the almighty God whom has kept himself hidden from the rulers of the current world and age.
And having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross Col 2:15
So, who are these rulers of darkness and death referred to as “them”?
Is it possible they have been put under spiritual law and this is all part of God’s sovereign plan for all people?
Is it possible that God even commands the “absence” of light which we call the darkness? Could this darkness have another name that we have missed all along?
If we were to analyze the darkness and ask where the light is (in human terms) couldn’t we say it’s “not” there? Please consider this word “not”, I believe it’s very important to understanding God’s purpose for darkness.
Let’s look at some verses of scripture and remove the word “not” and put in the word “powers of darkness” instead.
Here is the default version of 1 Cor 13:5
NOT is being indecent NOT is self-seeking, NOT is being beside-sharpened, NOT is keeping track of the Evil 1 Cor 13:5
Now, let’s change the word “NOT” with “powers of darkness” instead.
(THE) Powers of darkness are being indecent, Powers of Darkness are self-seeking, Powers of darkness are being beside-sharpened, The powers of darkness are keeping track of the Evil. Could we be missing a large part of God’s plan because we put our human understanding on the word “not” which means absolute negative or “void”.
Maybe it helps to think of the “void” or “not” simply as the absence of light. Thus, with God, there is still his essence in the void. This is like when you turn out the light in a room, the “essence” (chairs, tables, etc..) are still there even if the room is dark.
We could also think of “not”, the void, darkness as “negative integers” in God’s mind. Man thinks of them/it as “nothing” but even “nothing” is something with God. They are the very powers of darkness that rule the void or the “not”.
Think of “not” as the powers who rule the darkness who also include the human rulers of this world and all people to some extent because all die naturally. The ministry of “not” is responsible for all pain the world. The very word itself is “ou” in the original Greek and also “ouchi”. 2 Cor 3:8
With this in mind, let’s look at a different way to view some verses in 1 Cor 13.
“Not is being inflated” 1 Cor 13:4
“Not is rejoicing on the unjustness” 1 Cor 13:6
“Not is together joying to the truth” 1 Cor 13:6 also review 1 Cor 13:5 above again.
Why would “not” be together joying to the truth? Because “not” is the minister of the old covenant/ministry of death which the Lord is saving people via faith. 2 Cor 3:7-10 This will be annulled. Is 28:18
How will this occur?
How does the light make the darkness disappear when the switch is flipped on?
Hopefully these thoughts may allow us to see the darkness from a slightly different perspective and realize our loving God and savior is illuminating the darkness with love.
